Elder McGhie's experiences as a missionary in Peru.

Life in the Fast Lane

HOOLA mi estimada familia! Y las buenas nuevas que NO ESTOY MUERTO!!!  (Translation by Marty: Hello my dear family!  And the good news is I am not dead!! – this is because we didn’t hear from him on Monday)  Haha you guys just kill me sometimes.  So I’m here in the office and I was talking with Elder Poindexter and he tells me that he just received an email from you guys wondering what was going on.  Haha I couldn’t help but laugh and i was pretty sure that he was going to get an email from ya... Se LLAMA LA FE people!  (It is CALLED FAITH people)  But anyways, so yeah I’m here in Lima until tomorrow.  Today we have had a Capacitacion (I don’t know how to say that in English) Training Meeting or something? But anyways so we are here in Lima and we are going to have another meeting in about a half hour.  The Church has a new program for the trainers and the new guys, and it looks pretty awesome.  The Church is just really amazing with all the manuals and instructions.  If you look at the Church from all the different points of view of all the world it really is a marvelous work and a wonder.  To think that I have my buddies that are all across the world speaking a bunch of different languages and in all types of cultures, but the message is exactly the same and very simple.  That God is our loving Heavenly Father and His Son Jesus Christ has made it possible through God’s Great Plan, that we can return to live with him again someday.  And that once again God speaks through prophets as we see throughout the entire history of time.  It really just blows my mind that for example Dayton is on the other side of the world speaking an entire different language and culture, but it is the same scriptures, and the same manual Preach My Gospel with the same handouts and everything!!! It really is amazing! I’m so grateful for this time the Lord has given me to serve him in his vineyard and have my eyes opened to this Marvelous Work and a Wonder.  I challenge all the youth that are sure or not sure if they should serve a mission, to get on their knees tonight (not kneeling down on your bed but on the floor) and to pray out loud and just asked our Heavenly Father if you should be a missionary.  I promise without one ounce of doubt in my mind that he will answer, and the answer will be yes.  I don’t care if your 10, 15 or 25.  What your problems are or even if you’re inactive, if you could do me a big favor for your old pal Spence and just ask him.  I know he will answer.

Well to tell you about this week, I have really learned a lot about myself and the power of the Lord.  We baptized a grand total of 0 people this change.  I never ever, ever imagined I would blank for a whole change... I was discouraged and down, and just one day it hit me.  I don’t have Charity.  I was praying for it every night before begging for help to Love every person I pass on the street as my brother or sister and I was just preaching with Authority and practically running around the street talking with everyone.  And it dawned on me that I had lost a little of the fire, that desire to help everyone.  Very humbly I got down on my knees and just talked with my Father in Heaven, asked him to forgive me and asked for help to find that burning desire to contact the whole world.  And the next day I just went crazy, contacting the whole world.  It didn’t matter who they were, they were going to hear about this great message.  One lady decided to lean out of the top of her roof instead of answer the door to say, nope sorry I’m Catholic, haha but she wasn’t getting away that easy.  I just decided well what’s the difference if she is right in front of my face or 4 stories up, - I’ll just have talk a little bit louder.  I mean the Lord blessed me with a pretty loud voice, I’m sure my friends and fam can testify to the gift I inherited from my mom screaming in the house and about 15 years of BYU football games with the old man.  So she heard the message loud and clear.  And at the end of the day we got back to the apartment, I could hardly speak my voice was just shot, but I took a deep breath and I just felt good knowing that I did what I could for the Lord that day.  The key to the mission is not baptisms and numbers -  it’s doing all possible for the Lord.  The baptisms will come, I’m not worried about it.  The hard work, hiking up mini mountains to knock doors, not eating dinner cause there just aint time for that nonsense sometimes.   And that’s when I feel the best, when I just forget I’m tired, that I look kinda stupid screaming at the top of my lungs to invite people to join us Sunday, when I forget myself and go to work.  Because this is not my time.  It is His.  I know this Church is true without a shadow of a doubt because when I was 12 years old, I read Moroni 10:3-5 and I got on my knees and I asked.  And God answered my prayers, and because of that moment and the best family a kid could ask for, I am here in Lima Peru, as a 19 year old kid, speaking Spanish, and loving every minute of it.  I already have 9 months in the mission, time is short and running out.  It’s time to get back out there and spread the Good News.  I love ya fam with all I got, and can’t thank you enough for all you have done for me.  May the Lord be with you wherever you go.
Elder Spencer MARTY McGhie... aka Gringito
Ps mom, you are now officially my Momita.... =) Means little mom... LOVE YOU! CHAU!

Well thats just the way the Cookie Crumbles, Sometimes... haha

Estimada Familia y Amigos!!!

How ya doing these days???  I am very excited to hear about how mom is doing at the work out Nazi training camp!!! I have been sure to pray a little extra for her this week in all my prayers!!!  I hope all is well and that your just loving the summer sun! Cause it aint here in Huancayo that’s for sure!!! Haha, the weather here is just pretty nuts, in the mornings its really cold, but in the afternoon, the sun just BURNS for like 3 hours, then as soon as the sun goes down it is cold again,  I guess we are pretty high up in altitude here.  I dont know what it compares to with Utah but I’m guessing we are higher here.  So I guess I’ll give ya the down low on what happened here this week in the Mish!!! First of all about my investigators.... yeah pretty much all of them have jumped off the Salvation Train and have decided to take other paths, can’t lie I have been slightly discouraged this week.  After all we had about 5 or 6 investigators progressing beautifully and now... well they say, one is the loneliest number that you’ll ever do, and 2 can be as bad as one, cause its the loneliest number since the number one... oooohhh, but i guess Three Dog Night never had all of them bail out and be stuck at 0... its kinda crappy haha!  But I have lots of faith we will still be able to A about! It was just nuts, we got to the point where he said that he loves God and he is everything but for him Jesus Christ is nothing and doesn’t refer to him as his Savior... O wow I pretty much just about lost it, ya know that feeling when someone is picking on one of you siblings and you just want to throw down, yeah that’s how I felt, so I whipped out a little bit of Mormon chapter 9, 1 through 6 and we solved that problem very quickly.  So at the end of the lesson, he told us that we have not taught him one thing that has impacted him or made him change his beliefs about life and God and all that.  He then sort of laughed out loud when we told him that we can receive revelation directly from God through the Holy Ghost.  He said alright, I’ll give you guys one more chance to teach me and if you tell me something, just one thing, I will get baptized and be a member but if not, we cannot keep on having lessons... Haha funny story I was just about to tell him if he didn´t stop talking like a nut job we were never going to teach ever haha... but I resisted and agreed.  So me and my comp did some studying and some good old fasting and we had the appointment the very next day... And it was incredibly simple what the Spirit told us to teach him, the very basics, that number one, God Loves him, he is a child of God and that Gods purpose is to bring to pass the Immortality and Eternal Life of man and for that he has given us the way to be saved, through his Son Jesus Christ, and his atonement.  We taught him that Christ already did it all, conquered death, atoned for our sins and all we have to do is follow His teachings and firstly be baptized as he taught us and receive the Holy Ghost.  The Spirit was very strong, but simple, he had about 1000 questions but the spirit guided us to every answer in the scriptures and after about 2 and a half hours, he accepted it ALL!!!  I was about to send the story to the Ensign to be published, when he said that he knows the Book of Mormon is true and he has to be baptized to be saved... and then of course... Boom Goes the Dynamite.  He says he can’t get baptized, because God said that he has to wait!!! I MEAN, OH COME ON!!! I just about chucked myself off a bridge, I mean after 2 lessons back to back that were both just a battle to the death, He finally agrees on it all, but says that God doesn’t want him to get baptized. OH MY SWEET DEATH!!!  Can’t a guy catch a break here! We even kneeled down and prayed right there and the Spirit was so strong when he asked if he should get baptized, I was sure he was going to finish his prayer and say let go to the Font BABY!!! But he just denies it all, the feelings and everything... SO here we are and now we told him to call us when he is ready cause we have done all possible for him.  So if yall could do me a favor and send a prayer for Carlos that his heat is softened.  So the week was crazy, but we are hanging in there and fighting on!!! I love yall sosososos much! Good luck at fat camp mom!!! And finally Liney emailed me!!! HOOORAY!!! Love ya!!!

Carrie J!!

¡¡¡HOLA HOLA!!!
Bueno, Primeramente, tengo que decir algo sobre me estimado y querido Peru en la Copa AMERICA!!! ¡QUE TAL PERU! Semi Finals Baby!!! (Okay…translated from Marty, that says the following: Very well, first off, I want to say something about my esteemed and beloved Peru in the America’s Cup.  HOW ABOUT PERU!  Semi-finals Baby!!!)  To say the least the people here are pretty excited!!! So before I give you the big scoop on this week I have to respond to your last email...  First of all I’m SO JEALOUS OF THE YOUTH CONFERENCE!!! (It was a Book of Mormon Youth conference and everyone had to dress up like Nephites and they reinacted parts of the Book of Mormon and they got to fight wars too, with cardboard sheilds and foam swords! pics coming soon!!)  You know that’s my dream to dress up like Nephi and kill people with swords!!!  NOT FAIR!!! haha  I’m very anxious to hear how it all went!  Also dad, I’m so totally game for waking boarding camp!!! That’s like the best thing I have heard of since sliced bread!!!  Mom, Elder Prichet is my BOY!!! He’s a champ!  And thanks to Aunt Jane for her AWESOME email, the dear elder from Grandma and Grandpa Spencer, emails from Uncle Steven and Blake’s dad also!!!  It’s beyond great to hear from everyone!!! Some people I would like to hear from... Mitchell Peterson and Trevor Fugate!!!  I sent Will and Collin some letters and my family!!! Challis, Tal and Ethan and Nate, Kaycee, Aunt Kristen and well EVERYONE!!! That would be the best birthday present of all if everyone just wrote me something!!!

Alright onto what happened this week!  So Wednesday morning I was in the room of the zone leaders, I had been sleeping there and then going to my area in the day and preaching with some divisions or changes (I can’t remember how to say that in English)  So then the zone leaders called us Wednesday and said I had a companion!!!  And he is another new Elder... and another Chileno!!!  HAHAHA - how nuts eh? But he is really awesome, I miss Elder Pozo, he was really funny, but Elder Contreras is awesome!!!  So Saturday we had interviews with our new president and this morning we had our conference and I just have to say that he is the MAN!!! And his mom lives in Sandy!!! Before they went to the MTC they went to Sandy!!! Haha so that was cool to talk about, his wife is just really awesome as well!!! And he has 3 daughters that are 19, 14, and 12... I only met the 14 year old and 12 year old and they reminded me sososososososo much of LINEY!!! Haha so big news, we will not just be talking on the phone this Christmas... WE WILL BE SKYPING!!! O HECK YEAH!!! How awesome is that! So I’m pretty stoked about that for sure!!!  This week was pretty nuts, we have a pretty big goal for my area and we are right now at 0 baptisms... I was getting pretty frustrated cause at the beginning of July we knelt down and just asked the Lord what should be our goal for this month... we both felt that it should be 5 baptisms...  And so this week I just started to get a little frustrated, cause my investigators started to fade and I didn´t know why!  I am doing the best I can, really I am trying to be obedient with exactness, but they were all just bailing out!  So Sunday came around and we passed by the houses of our investigators and no one was answering the door or anything!!!  And me being a man of little faith just started to doubt, I was saying how am I going to baptize anyone this month!!!  No one even wants to attend church, so how can I baptize 5 people let alone 1!!!  Oh, ye men of little faith...  We ended up with 6 investigators at church!!!  We only arrived at the beginning of Sacrament meeting with 2!!!  And they just kept filing in little by little!!!  So we have 2 or 3 baptisms this Saturday, and we will see what comes about this next week.  But I know that in these 2 weeks there are 5 people to be baptized!  Because that is what the Lord told us!  The Lord wants at least 5 baptisms here in Huancayo, La Florida, so that’s just what I’m going to have to do...  So should be pretty interesting this coming week, we have found a few new families and we are really working hard with them!  If you could pray for Hermano Cezar that he and his family can have the faith to close their shop on Sunday and go to church, and for Hno Carlos that he can really read the Book of Mormon and gain a testimony of the truthfulness... also Jesus and Adriana, that they can continue progressing towards their baptismal date for this Saturday!!!  I would appreciate that greatly!!!  So the mission is just crazy, my new mission president, President Ardila is really a fantastic guy and I can already see that he is here for a reason to help this mission and me personally as well!!!  Sorry that this email was pretty lame, my brain is just fried after our conference for like 6 hours!!!  Haha I really can’t think of much to say other than i LOVE YOU GUYS!!! I’m loving the mission, it’s tough, but that’s why I love it so much!!!  I am almost finished with the Book of Mormon... IN SPANISH!!! I’m in the last chapter of Mormon, so it’s pretty amazing to see how far I have come in my Spanish!!!  It really is quite a miracle!! I love ya fam and keep it real!!
Elder McGhie!!!
ps
Dad, one more thing for my birthday if you could send me Jesus the Christ in Spanish! LOVE YOU GUYS!!! And i would like to get an email from every one of you with your favorite scripture.... that’s for the fam!!! LOVE YA BYE!!!

July 11, 2011

Oh, and once more another great adventure lies ahead!!!

¡¡¡Estimada FAMILIA y AMIGOS!!!

What’s going on GUYS?!!! First of all I have to say I’m here typing you this email in Huancayo, and the owner of this little internet hub, is cranking out the song Dragon Force from Guitar Hero!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Almost to many memories with this song!!! Family, you might not appreciate that, but Collin, Will, Keaton, Ryan, Brandon,  and Jake Corry will definetly appreciate it and will bring back a flooooood of memories Jammin out in Lola pretending to play the guitar with Tennis Rackets hahahahahaha, sorry i had to get that off my chest!!! And well on to the good stuff!!
So I have to start off by saying that i am here companionless!!! NOOOOO!!!Yep!!!  My comp Elder Pozo had to go to Lima and he will be there for an entire MONTH!!! NO!!!! He hurt his knee and now he has to be in the Office for a month resting his knee!!! So to say the least this week was a giant crazy mess!!!  We were in the doctor’s office for about a total of 6 hours this week... WOOOOOFFFFFF!  I hate the doctor’s office! So to say the least we missed about a combined total of 13 to 15 lessons this week... ¡¡¡It was HORRIBLE!!!  I always thought back in my earlier days in the field, that it would be somewhat great to have a companion that was sick so that one day I could take a nap or something... WRONGO! It was the Pitts!!! The whole day Thursday we had to stay in the apartment cause my comp couldn´t walk... I was losing my mind just sitting in the apartment!!! It was just really a strange experience, like the first time in 8 months where I just kinda sat there and had time to think, I was just thinking how crazy it is that I have been on my mission for 8 months and I already have changed so much.  I just kinda sat there, read my patriarchal blessing and just thought about life I guess... we all know I’m not the deepest guy, but it just kinda hit me, the whole mission thing that actually one day its going to end, and it will come faster than I can possibly imagine, and then it’s just back to normal life after that!!! AHHHHH!!! How scary is that!   But anyways, Friday my comp went to Lima and I now have a 19 yr old young man, from the ward here, staying with me as my ¨"Companion". I never realized the difference in a missionary with a nametag and the calling and just a normal teen or something.  I’m not saying that he’s not a good kid or anything, he is going on his mission in like 3 months, but there is just something distinctly different, there is definitely Power in the NAMETAG!!! I was my “substitute companion” and another young man from the ward yesterday, out contacting people in the streets, and it was so weird, they were talking about stuff that I haven´t even thought of for like 8 months haha!!! Like the latest cell phones, tv shows, movies, and the weirdest of all... GIRLS!!! AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!! If you thought i was afraid of Girls before the mission, just wait till i get home from the mission!  I dont even think I can look a girl in the eye, let alone hug a girl!!!     AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! That’s the weirdest thought I have had in a long time, one day it will actually be legal for me to hug a girl... WOOF! To say the least it will be pretty interesting when I get back and they all start tellin me to get married... NOT GUNNA HAPPEN!!!  So if everyone could give a prayer for my comp, Elder Pozo, he’s only been on his mission for 1 month and to have that happen to you after being out only 1 month! TOUGH STUFF!!!  And now I pretty much have to do 100 percent of the lessons, contacts and everything!!! It’s going to be an interesting, and rather difficult month.  But I know the Lord has a bunch of lessons that I’m supposed to learn from this experience, so we shall just wait and see!!!

Well, I had 2 pretty solid Gringo experiences this week...  First of all we were walking in the street one day in the afternoon, contacting people and we passed this little old lady who was picking flowers, we said Buenos Tardes, and she looked up and screamed ¡¡¡O QUE MARAVILLA (Hey, Carrie here, Google translator says that means ,”you are wonderful”??)!!!  I was like... umm apparently she wants to talk to us, so we went over and I started to introduce myself and all that jazz and she immediately broke out into song, singing the hymn “How Great Thou Art”, so I thought she might be a member of our church but then she started to change the words, and sing louder and louder and then started to like yell and cry and then started Sobbing!  A picture of that moment would probably be worth a thousand bucks, for like 15 seconds I just kinda stared and had no idea what to do...  Then her son or grandson ran out of the house grabbed her and started dragging her into the house, She then looked back, yelled GRINGO and tossed me a flower and like skipped away... haha I mean what in the heck is that! Probably the weirdest 30 seconds of my entire life!!

The next Gringo experience is an eye roller!!! So, Huancayo is at a really high altitude and it is also very dry, so my skin is like dying, and the sun BURNS!  So I broke out the sun screen today and I had to buy some lotion, the lady in the store tried to sell me some lotion for like 25 bucks, I was like... umm no!?  so she grabbed this other lotion, I said, I think that’s only for women, she says nope, says here its unisex and only 10 soles, I’m like, yeah I’ll take it!  That night I get back to the room, bust out the lotion cause my hands were just wrecked and it is like 100 percent for women and smells just like I walked out of that Bath and Body store or something... woof!! So now every night I go to bed smelling like Caroline or Ainsley with my pink lotion... Dont judge me! So thats pretty rough, the youth that is my companion, probably thought I was sort of feminine haha, nope, just a gringo that get severely taken advantage of!!! Well I’m signing off for now! Know I love all yall!!! And keep the faith!!!
Elder McGhie!!!

Hola again, I had a few more minutes!!!
So here are some things I have thought of that I could use for my birthday...  A good workout band, dad will know what I’m talking about, like a giant rubber band thingy with handles... Some candy!!! Mike-n-Ikes, Cashews and Planters Peanuts! Some more peanut butter, another journal, Picture of the Draper Temple, a post card of BYU, the campus and cool stuff, some photos of youth activities, vacations, campouts, another journal, a picture of my baby girl LOLA (in case you don’t know, Lola is his car and Marty thinks he is selling it……WRONG. I can guarantee that Lola isn’t going anywhere, Spencer loves that car!) and whatever you feel would be fun!! I love you all sososososossososos much! And yeah my pensionista is great, our room is really really safe, there is like a giant wall with big spikes surrounding it (is he making fun of me by telling me it has a wall with big spikes??), its the same area that Elder Madsen was in when he left the Peru MTC!!! So you can talk to his mom and find out all about it!! Pretty cool eh, I told the Pentionista that Elder Madsen was doing great in Tarma and that his mom said thanks for taking such good care of him while he was in Huancayo?  Oh and Mom, some bad news... we can’t call you Mamasita anymore... haha, I found out that it means like your girlfriend, sorry!  Haha!! So how about we call you Mamita!!! Thats the right word... haha love ya!!! Keep it real in Utah,  all is well here in Peru, tell dad the pack of plain white shirts was brilliant, I use them every day (I have no idea what pack of white shirts he is talking about???)!!! Les extraño un MONTON!!! Que tengan un BUUUEEN Dia (Goggle again, since Marty is asleep, translates it as, I miss you all, have a wonderful Day)!!!
Con mucho amor,
Spence the missionary guy, McGhie

July 4, 2011

Instead of Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, and going swimming in the sun... Chicken, Rice, and Preachin the Gospel! HAHA Happy 4th of July!!!!!!

What’s the Word Guys!?

So well Happy 4th of July!!! It’s so strange to think its the 4th of July! Cause well i haven´t seen a barbeque let alone a cheeseburger in about 8 months! HAHA, and of course it’s flippin COLD HERE! That just isn’t right that it is the 4th of July and its cold! HAHA But you’ll be happy to hear that I had my own little 4th of July party this morning... I woke up to the Air Force Anthem in Honor of Grandpa Spencer, but I don’t have the one of the Army... Sorry Grandpa McGhie, but I listened to the Marines one as well... haha so I’m sure my comp was overjoyed with happiness to listen to Anthems of America the entire morning!!! HAHAHAHAHA Mo-Tab works magic in that CD!!! HOOOORAY FOR THE USA! My first 4th of July out of the states...  man the states are great! HAHA and in the shower this morning I sang, “IM PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN, WHERE AT LEAST I KNOW IM FREE, AND I WONT FORGET THE MEN WHO DIED TO GIVE THAT RIGHT TO ME!!!”… and so on and so forth! So if all of you could do 3 favors for me today... First of all, eat a hot dog or a hamburger and LOVE IT, then Listen to that song at least once for me... “I’m proud to be an American”, Uncle Ricks favorite song... and then give the good old stars and stripes a salute for this guy!!! It will be much appreciated!
Well now onto my weekly report... To say the least I had one of my biggest Gringo moments of my life this week! So strap on and prepare for this one!  So at the beginning of every month we go to the bank to draw out our money.  And we always just do it in Soles, but for some reason we had to get it out in dollars and then trade it for soles.... yeah, you already know what’s coming!  So me and my new Chilean companion (Peruanos  dont like Chileans)  leave the bank with a butt load of money to pay the pension and the room and laundry and all that stuff... So we go down a street where there are like 50 shops to exchange dollars.  SO we find the shop with the best trade in and we enter.  I had a crapload of money so we enter and we see the exchange rate, they do it all on their calculator and all is well.  We are trading the money in and all that stuff.  When they changed the money I started to count it all for like the 3rd time just in case, and they got annoyed and then took the money and started counting it out loud to me and made me feel stupid so i was like ya, ya it’s alright.  We leave and get back to the room and my comp starts counting his money again.   I was in the bathroom and he starts hooping and hollering, Hey!!! Hey!!! They robbed me 20 soles! And in Peru 20 soles is a pretty good amount of money.  I though he was just being a psycho Chilean who is always accusing the Peruanos for robbing them of everything... haha! So I don’t say anything but he just kept freaking out so we counted his money and he WAS short 20 bucks, so then I start to get a little worried and I count my money and those tools jacked me 50 soles!!! GARBAGE! I was flippin ticked, 50 soles is a bunch of money, I mean the church only gives us like 85 soles for the whole month to live on so you do the math!!! So we got in a taxi and I was like,…WE ARE GETTING OUR MONEY BACK!!! But before we left we said a prayer and it calmed me down, and I got to thinking, what would Jesus do in this situation...  My comp wanted to storm in there and just start rippin heads off, but I got an idea of how Christ would get his money back... So we get to the little sketchy shop and all the little money changers are in there and all got way excited thinking we were there to trade more money so they could rob us more... Boy,  were they wrong! I entered and just said, “Sorry Hermanos, we forgot to invite you to join us in church this Sunday at 9 in the morning!”  Then I whipped out a bunch of Hand out cards with the picture of Jesus and his red robe and said, also we have some gifts for you... laminated pictures of Jesus Christ!!!!! HAHAHAHA!!! I then started to explain a little about our missions, how we are here to serve Christ and it’s all service and they don’t pay us and the money is so that we can pay our pension and eat!!! I then said,”Now brothers you owe me 50 soles and my companion 20”... And you know what………… they all just immediately whipped out the money threw it on the table and just stared at the floor!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!  How about them apples!!!! They wouldn’t even look me in the eye! I finished up the invite to church told them that it would help them a lot and change their lives! I handed them the Handouts of Christ and we bailed!!! OOOOHHH HECK YEAH BABY!!! I felt like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid or Clint Eastwood in Dirt Harry... Come on Boy, Make my DAY!!! HAHA!!  IT might sound way lame but it was totally Legit! Haha…. take that world!!! SO……. that was a big moment this week!!!! As of a week and a half ago we didn’t have 1 investigator and guess how many we had at church yesterday.... 5!!! WHAT!!! MIRACLES FROM THE HAND OF THE LORD! 3 of them have baptismal dates for the 23rd and we have a lesson with the others tonight and we are going to challenge them to see if they want to get baptized!!! MIRACLES; nothing more, nothing less! I love the mission, it’s really, really hard sometimes but I am learning lessons in these 2 years that would take 20 years to learn!

I have to say that your emails family, last week saved me!!! They were answers to my Prayers! Ainsley email of how we should give thanks for our challenges was just what I needed to hear, also Lineys email what so powerful, it put me to tears!!! Fam and Friends I love you all sososososo much, enjoy this 4th of July and don’t forget to sing, “I’m Proud To Be An American, really loud before the 4th is over!!!!!  You are always in my thoughts and prayers, LOVE YOU GUYS!!!
Elder Spencer Marty McGhie.... HHOOORAY AMERICA!!!
Ps mom, the birthday package, i could use these things called the perfect pushup little hand things that twist, also lots of chocolate, fotos, surprises and a stapler!!! Also a family picture of all of us framed and ready! LOVE YALL SOSOSOSOSO MUCH

BYE!

FAM!, I have a short time left, just to say my pensionista is the wife of the bishop and great! She isnt Hermana Genoveva but it’s all good!!! Also, yeah that La Florida market is right in my area! The chapel is just down the street! My area is huge and I live in the part called PIO PATA. Right by the big Catholic church! I miss you all so much and what! I read Ainsleys short email, CULINARY SCHOOL!!! THATA Girl!!! THATA Girl!!! Mom I had an amazing experience the other day in my prayer before I went to sleep, I started praying and I just got this distinctive feeling that you were either praying for me or talking to me or in my room just chatting it up with me (I do that a lot, this is Carrie, and I don’t care if it is weird because it makes me happy =) !! )! It was incredible! And then Ainsleys experience, that I was praying for her and she felt me praying for her, how amazing is that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fam I love you and I need some prayers, I’m learning lots of patience and humility with Elder Pozo, The some of the people from Chile are like 5 year olds (not all of them, like my last companion, Elder Encina he was amazing), they like to pinch, push and just play little games to annoy you!  Pray for me please! Oh and everything is about how much better Chile is than Peru and how it’s just so great and how the USA is lame! AHHH!!! I want to hit him sometimes, help me to be humble and patient....I am his trainer and I need to love him and teach him how to be a great missionary.it’s kind of hard but I am working on it, I just could use truck load of help!!!!.....................................PLEASE!!!!
Love You All Soooooooooooooooo Much!!!
CHAU!

A TUFF WEEK!!!

\HOLA MI ESTIMADA FAMILIA  Y SORPRENDENTES AMIGOS!!!!!!!!
Well here I am in HUANCAYO!!! Holy Smokes it actually happened I got TRANSFERRED!   I was very excited, haha and I had no idea what was in for me!!! So I am training a new missionary again, I’m opening up the area and I have been called as District Leader!!! AHHHHHHHH… HELP!!!  So I get here and my area is called La Florida, it is GIGANTIC!!! And well the missionaries before me, they both have like 22 months in their mission and left me with absolutely nothing!!! We got to our room and it was so disgusting.  The First night we cleaned for about 3 hours, to make our room at least livable…  But now I have got to tell you about how HARD it was to leave Huanuco, Hermana Genoveva, My comp and my ward.  Tuesday night after we heard the changes, I immediately went to talk to my pensionista and her fam.  I went and she wasn’t there!!! So Wednesday morning after being up until 4 in the morning packing and writing in people’s memory notebooks, I went to eat in the house of Hermana Genoveva for the last time.  Well actually I was running really late (no surprise there) so I just went to say bye, I got there and she said breakfast was already ready.  How could I say no to that… so I sat down and it just hit me like a ton of bricks that I wouldnt be returning to eat with here until who knows when…??  She started to bawl, my comp too and of course  me…!!!  After almost 6 months of just being with her 3 times every day, talking laughing and all that it just hit me and the tears came storming out…  I won’t lie it really was almost like I was leaving my family again.  We took some pictures and we all left bawling…  MY first night here, I was just distraught.  My area is huge, my knew comp is a Chileno again, but he isn’t like Elder Encina, who was the best companion I have had yet in Peru.  I just knelt down so overwhelmed and slightly scared of failing and I didn’t have any idea how to open and area with a new missionary, I really was just freaking out.  I wont lie just typing this out is making me cry…  I miss hna genoveva, my comp, luis and ines and all of the wonderful people in the ward so much!! It was like I left my family again.  Just like that, 6 months flew by and now I have no idea when I will get to see them again.  Then I get here in Huancayo, with absolutely nothing, not one investigator, nothing in the area book, I didn’t know a single soul, my pension is great, but she isn’t  Hna Genoveva.  Huancayo, is nothing like Huanuco.  Its so much bigger and world like… There are actually cars here and big buildings, and paved roads… in the morning and in the night it is FREEZING, and in the afternoon, the sun just burns cause we are so high up! Almost 14,000 feet!!! I Think… So I just had no idea what to do.  SO ya know what I did?   I just started over, and started from square 1… CONTACTING,  and contacting isn’t the most rewarding or easiest work.  But it sure paid off.  After being here for only 4 days, we had 13 new investigators and 4 attended church!!! BOOM! Just like that!  I was walking down the street at night after contacting all day and finally we found a member to show us the area.  SO usually when your with a member you don’t street contact, but we were walking down the street and I saw a little family that reminded me of Luis and Ines, a young couple and their little boy.  I just saw em there I kinda stopped but kept walking and something hit me, that they were just like luis and ines, so I backtracked and contacted them.  Their names are Miguel and Rosario… and we had like a 10 minute lesson with them the next day, they accepted a baptismal date and a date to get married!!! WHAT!!! That never happens in a little 10 minute lesson, but the spirit was strong!!! And they attended church Sunday.  To say the least my area here is ready!!! There hasn’t been much success here in a while but we are here to change that!  Also I had to do my fist baptismal interviews yesterday since I am the district leader AAAAAAAAHHHHH!!! I was soosososososo Scared! But the spirit was unbelievably strong and guiding me!  I interviewed a man and his daughter and the man… well he didn’t pass!!! AHHH!!! He and his wife had an abortion a while ago, so he has to talk to a counselor in the mission presidency… I was like Oh CRAP when I heard that! But the Spirit acted quickly, I wasn’t speaking, it was all the spirit, I could see he really had repented of it all and felt really bad.  But rules are rules, he will have another interview this week, and I still think he will get baptized.  His daughter passed though!!! SO to say the least it has been a tuff week!!!!  So, I will need a lot of letters and encouragement this month!!! I missed the fam a lot this week, I hope all is well, when is youth conference and EFY???
Okay, dad, I need some help here since you have already done your mission.  I would like to hear how your mission blessed your life??  I just need to hear some serious stuff about serving your mission and how it has impacted your life!!  I just need some serious help from EVERYONE!!!!!!!  Please pray a lot for me because I am really overwhelmed and could just use some extra help here!!!!! Don’t worry I’m not failing or thinking of bagging it, I would never ever do that; I just need to be able to do this assignment in Huancayo!  So please say some extra prayers for me this week!!!
LOOVEEE YOU ALLL SOSOSOS MUCH!!!
Elder Spencer Marty McGhie!
P.S…….Mom I’m in Hunacayo... its COLD!!! Haha !!!  I am sending some of my last pics in Huanuco ... man i miss Huanuco!!! It cut deep to leave!!! Love you guys!!!!

HAPPY FATHERS DAY!!!!

FELIZ DIA DEL PADRE OLD MAN!!!

Maybe a day late and a dollar short, but hey ya get what ya get man… HAHA!  Hope it was a pretty awesome day for ya Pops, I’m sure it was hard to enjoy it without this guy there… (IM NOT PRIDEFUL… JUST SURE) haha,  just messin but don’t fret pops I was thinking about ya yesterday and I hope it was GRAND!!!  I hope ya got my father’s day letter I sent it like 2 weeks ago!  Oh and before I start letting ya know what’s going down here I gotta say, the package you sent me was AWESOME!!! But….. What happened to LINEY!! AAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!  I cracked out the pictures and started looking at them and I just about fell off my chair and onto my face!!! SWEET DEATH MY LITTLE SISTER IS LIKE A WOMEN OR SOMETHING!!!AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!  HAHA! I mean honestly,  holy crap!  I Whipped out my photo album with all my pics that I left home with and I was comparing the difference, the only words I could manage to mutter were; Holy Crap, Sweet Death, and ¡¡¡AY CARAMBA!!!  Haha but seriously everyone is changing and its freaking me out!

So, sorry I had to get that off my chest and now I can start giving ya the Down Low on what happened this week…. Well alright, let’s see, this very well could be the last email I send home from Huanuco, Paucarbama.  I don’t know we will see soon!!!  It’s a pretty exciting time here, we have transfers coming on Wednesday and we will be getting a new Mission President on July 1st.  I love President Leyva and it’ll be sad to see him go.  But that’s the mission for ya!  One day your in the mission, lost in the work and then boom, it kicks ya right back out, into the cruel reality of “real life”!!! Haha!!  So, I think it was Thursday when we stopped by to see how Luis and Ines, 2 of my converts were doing. Do you remember them? They are the young couple that got married and baptized way back when I was with Elder Rojo(his trainer).  Luis who had all the problems and he left for Lima and it was a question if she was going to leave him or not. Well you should be happy to know that they are some of the most faithful members we have in our ward!!! Hermano Luis has the Melchizedek Priesthood and they both have callings and the change in the lives is a full 180 degrees (or 360 if you’re Karl Malone!)  They are amazing!!! So we went by to see how they were doing, they said they were doing really well, but they were hungry… I was like Huh?  They said they were fasting for their first time… and do you wanna know why they were fasting? They were fasting so that I will be able to stay here for 6 more weeks and not get transferred !!! HAHAHAHA!!! I couldn´t help but laugh, it surprised me, but it also is a very nice gesture on their part!!! Haha!!

The Zone leaders ate lunch with my buddy the Stake President here in Huanuco, Puacarbamba and they were talking about the possible  upcoming transfers and they told him that it is very likely that I will get transferred since I have the most time here of any missionary in our Zone.  The Stake President said that it just couldn’t happen and that he was going to call the Mission President, Pres. Leyva and tell him that I need to stay here in Puacarbamba and keep working here for at least one more transfer! Is that nuts or what!?  I do feel loved to say the least… haha I don’t know what will happen but it will be the will of the Lord.  If I had a choice I’m pretty sure I would like a change of scenery.  I mean, I love it here but I have almost completed one third of my mission and I’m still in the same area… Haha I mean I gotta get to know more of Peru and see more things and meet more people!  But my companion is an absolute champion, we have a lot of investigators progressing so if I stay… yeah it’s alright but whatever happens is for the best!!!

Yesterday, I almost lost it on myself.  I was dead tired from working this week(We kicked BUTT) we had like 25 lessons. 13 new investigators, 5 investigators come to church and 17 baptismal challenges, I was sososo dead tired Sunday night. We were eating dinner and we had this onion potato soup with a random hunk of meat.
I tried to cut my meat and it spilled ALL OVER ME!!! I was so flippin mad at cursing myself out as I went to the bathroom to try and wash the stains out (KEY WORD TRY) and then I just looked in the mirror and I just realized, Im just a flipping KID! Hah I’m only 19 years old!  I need to have more patience with myself, sometimes I am just so hard on myself and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing but if I keep it up at this rate, I don’t know if I’ll return home with any hair on my head!  So it was just an interesting lesson that I should apply.  I dunno if someone could help me here with that????

So, I have a few questions for the “Old Man” meaning you dad!!!!  What’s your opinion on the 2nd coming and how close do you think it is? Also I need some info on the Spirit World.  Are they allowed to see what’s going on here? Just some questions that I have gotten during some of our lessons with investigators and I just thought I should find out more about it????

Well I love you all!!! Thanks for all the support, the prayers on my behalf and the letters and emails are all so great!!!  It all helps me so much!!!!
Talk to ya next Monday!!!
CHAU!
Elder Spencer Marty McGhie!

Whats the Word !!!

¡HOOOOOLA FAMILA Y MIS AMIGOS MUY MARAVILLOSAS

¿Como le va mi estimada familia y mis amigos? ¡Espero que todo este bien para ustedes!(google translator: As you will be my dear friends and family? I hope that all this good for you!???) (Martys translation: How are you my esteemed family and friends, I hope all is well for all of you!!)!!

Well that was fun while it lasted haha.  But really, how ya all doin?  I pray for yall every day and night that all is going well!  So reporting here live from Huanuco, Paucarbamba, got some good news, i got my package today! Holy smokes that got here fast!!! Haven’t opened it yet, but I’m stoked! (my comp as well haha)  So as for now everyone can breathe a little, there won’t be any changes in the mission as of now.  They said it all depends on how Ollanta is when he is the actually president.  SO we will all just wait and see, but as for now I’m just here preaching my guts out in Perù! And I have to say I flippin Love Perù!!!  Its just too great!

So this week has been one of the tuffest weeks of the mission.  We had a bunch of Investigators and a really high Goal for this month...  and they were droppin like flies!!! UGh it was the worst!!! I probably called all of them at least 30 times this week and they didnt answer their phone or their door!!! ¡¡¡NO HAY AMOR!!!  I was just really, really frustrated and i have this blasted head cold, i cant think straight! It’s like walking around with a cloud in my head trying to speak Spanish!!! NOT EASY! Haha but the other day I was just doing my personal study and I’m reading the Book of Mormon in Spanish, right now I’m in 3 Nephi and it is just too awesome!!! I was reading in 3 Nephi Chapter 9 and reading in Spanish isn’t the easiest thing, cause there are always new verbs and sometimes I gotta whip out my BOM in English to understand and sometimes it just frustrates me! And this particular morning (yesterday) I was in no mood to go through the translating onslaught, I just was reading “Our Search for Happiness” in English and enjoying it very much.  But the Spirit told me I needed to read my Book of Mormon in Spanish, dang I was in a personal Battle, my Natural Man did NOT want to but the spirit told me to! So I just went with what i felt, I mean what else can we do these days, and 3 Nephi 9 just spoke to me! It was just awesome.  Its right after Christ was Crucified and what happened in the Americas and the voice of the Lord just comes over all of the people and it’s just straight up AWESOMENESS!! From verse 13 till 22, he tells us what we must do to be saved.  The Lord tells us that His arm of Mercy is always extended and we just have to accept it! But how? This also refers to 2 Nephi 28, 31 and 32, some of my favorite scriptures in all the world.  But we just need to take his hand, but how... by offering a Broken Heart and a Contrite Spirit.  NADA MÁS! But the question now is how to we offer a broken heart and a contrite spirit? By repenting and returning to the Lord as a small child, humble and meek.  That is what I was lacking this week, I was just losing my mind and flippin out about our investigators, then I realized, that I dont have to do it alone, I just gotta take a deep breath, Humble myself, take the Hand of the Lord as a small child and we will walk together.  We will just take it all on, and we will not lose or fail.  Because with the Lord, Nothing is Impossible.  So I did just that, knelt down and just said, I’m sorry for all the wrong I’m doing and that I had forgotten the Lord.   So, me and my comp decided to start a fast, and I have to tell you, I never really had a testimony of the Power of Fasting before my mission.  Before the mission, I fasted until after church and thought, yeah that should do it, and I would just sit my butt on the couch and watch football... I WAS SUCH A CHUMP!!! Fasting is sososososososo amazing.  If anyone out there is feeling confused, or just lost, then you should FAST!!!  But do it right, the full 24 hours, with prayer in your heart always, and dont forget to start it with a prayer and end it with a prayer and you will see miracles.

So the bishop asked me to give a ten minute talk, 2 minutes before sacrament meeting started, and now I’m just like sure… Why not! I was TOTALLY UNFASED haha, but I got up there and I spoke on, “How we can’t wait till tomorrow to make changes, cause if we wait till tomorrow to act, Tomorrow might never come!  We have to act TODAY!” And I thought it was good, but you know me, when I get up and start talking who knows what’s going to come out of my mouth, and I just thanked them simply for their love, patience, and examples to me.  That they just accepted some Strange Gringo that doesn’t speak Spanish and they just loved me and really helped ME!!! I of course once again, you know me, THE TEARS STARTED COMING OUT LIKE A WATERFALL!  But it was sincere and real.  I love these people so much.  I can’t put it in words.  And maybe I only have 10 days more here (transfers are in 10 days) and after that who knows when I will see any of them again.  I had to tell them how it was.  I looked and the whole ward was all balling.  I closed by choking out Amen, and quickly returned to my seat, when I was ambushed by like half the ward. It was quite embarrassing, it was a Peruano Blur like 10 people were just hugging me and I dont even know what happened.  Haha it was really, really sweet.
I love these people so much.  They are so amazing.  They just have something that isnt found very often in the USA and I think it is a pure and unconditional love for their fellow men.  If anyone ever thinks or says that they are better than someone because they are from the United States they are DEAD Wrong.  God loves us equally and Peru, here in Huanuco, they have something that we should all strive to have, especially me, a pure, unconditional love for everyone.  I love my mission i wouldn’t trade it for the world.  The Church is true.  So live it!

Hey, I got a little trunky thinking how lucky Liney is to have visited and be visiting in Europe!!! You sly dog Liney!!!  I can’t believe your growing up sosososo fast!!! I’m jealous of ya little Liney! You will always be my best pal!!!
LOVE YOU ALL!!!  I pray for you constantly as we are apart!!!
KEEP IT REAL!!!

Love it while you have it

Well Hello there Family and Friends,

How we doing today!?  So first ill start out with some replies from the last emails i received... First of all a huge congrats to my boy Big Will Pavia!!! That mission sounds absolutely Awesome!!! Congrats my brother!!! Also a big congrats to Ainsley for her huge new calling in the ward, NURSERY!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!! Ainsley, you stole dad´s dream calling!  So I’m interested to hear how Ainsley´s babysitting adventures turn out in the Nursery.  Also mom, thanks so much for your email last week, it was honestly AMAZING!  You were wrecking house in that email!!! My respects for sure!!! Oh, so last P Day we watched Mobsters and Mormons, and it was hilarious, and so weird to see Utah again!!! You guys should watch it for family night this week!!!

Well onto the big news, that tool, Ollanta won the election for President of Peru... oh crap! Im flippin out, I won’t lie, the rumor is that if he won then the church would automatically pull out all the Gringos as they did in Bolivia about 3 or 4 years ago! I wont lie I couldn’t sleep last night! I was just up and just thinking the whole night! I cant leave my Beloved Peru! I love these people too much! This is my mission; no other mission is my mission.
I dunno I was just thinking a lot and it hit me, the key to life is, ya gotta love all ya got, while ya still got it.   It is really the key to life.  Live, Love, and Laugh every single day. Enjoy every second of everything we have, because we just dont know what tomorrow will bring.  I don´t know how much time I have left in Peru.  But I will love every second of it.  Who knows maybe I will get to stay here, but it is doubtful... I have learned a valuable lesson; we must live every day, every moment and every second like it’s the last.  We must love it all, the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly! When it seems like every person you talk to and contact in the street is an Evangelist that hates Mormons and just want to take you down, when the only people that want to talk to you are Drunk Guys, and Teenage Girls, and when not one of the investigators will even try to read the Book of Mormon and meditate about what it says and then pray to know if it’s true, what can or what should we do? Get on our knees and thank the Lord God above for one more day of life, another moment or opportunity to do something great.  We must enjoy every second of every day.  Life is too short, it is always changing, Time waits for No Man.  As I returned back to my room one day after having only a few lessons and the lessons didn’t go well, when I honestly can say almost every person we contacted was someone that attacked at least one aspect of the Church, I just wanted to curl up in a ball and cry.  It is just so hard and so tuff sometimes, but it is so necessary and worth it.  And what we need to do is kneel in prayer and thank our Heavenly Father that we have this Gospel in our Lives, thank Him that we have this great opportunity to be here on the earth today.  And that there is hope in this world, we just have to BELIEVE! Just live with hope and trust in the Lord.

As I was studying I found a great scripture in D &C section 68 verse 7 (i think)  But it says ¨Be of good cheer, for I am the Lord they God and I WILL STAND BY YOU and you will preach of me, that I came, that I am, and that I will come again.”  Now I absolutely butchered that scripture but you get the picture.  It will be Terrible if I have to leave Peru and go to another country, but it’s not my will that matters, it’s the will of the Lord.  I don’t know what is going to happen, but what happens; let it happen, because I’m a Disciple of Jesus Christ.  I am his servant, Called By a Living Prophet of God, and in the end it doesn’t matter where you serve, be it Peru, Chile, The States, Canada, Bolivia, Argentina, Ecuador, or Honduras it doesn’t matter where you serve, what is important is HOW you serve.  As the Hymn says, I´ll go where you want me to go dear Lord, over mountains, or plains or seas...  Now it’s my turn to show the Lord my loyalty to him.  And go and do, with a big old smile on my face!!! Cause we don’t know how long we got people!!! We dont know what will happen tomorrow, what circumstances will change, so we MUST enjoy all we have TODAY! Right NOW! I dont know how much time I have left here in my Beloved Peru, but I will enjoy, live, and love every moment I’ve got here in this wonderful country with these people i love.  Life is too short and too fast to be thinking of tomorrow or next week or in 2 years, let us live today with all we got, and wherever thou art, do well thy part!!! I know this is the Church of Jesus Christ.  My challenge to all today and forever, is Live today like its your last, love all around you, (even the drunk guys that just want free stuff and to bug ¨The Gringo¨)  If you could do anything for me today, just live it up today!!! Dont be afraid, cause we just never know what tomorrow will bring!!! Thanks Fam and all my great friends out there,
I LOVE YOU ALL SOSOSOSO MUCH!
And dont worry mom, all will work out for the best!
Elder Spencer Marty McGhie...
